20/10/2014

DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. Some might still refer to it as a CRB / Criminal Records Bureau check. The reason for the name change is because the CRB and the ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority have merged and are therefore now called the DBS.

These checks are usually necessary when individuals work with children or in healthcare, you will also have to comply when applying to foster or adopt a child.

Employers have the right to request DBS checks for certain roles a full list of the eligible roles can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dbs-check-eligible-positions-guidance
It is important however to bear in mind that there are different rules for Scotland and Northern Ireland and job candidates should not apply for the check themselves but this should be done by the potential employer.

There are three types of criminal record checks and these are; Standard, Enhanced and an Enhanced with list checks.
